Possible New Ransom Note in Nancy Guthrie Investigation
Nearly eight months after NBC correspondent Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared, authorities are now considering a potential new ransom note. A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced early Tuesday that the PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force had become aware of this new development in the investigation.
“Investigators are also aware of social media discussions regarding the note and are looking further into the information to assess its reliability,” the sheriff’s department noted, emphasizing their collaboration with the FBI in this case.
This latest ransom note, regardless of its authenticity, is the third letter connected to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance that has come to public attention and has reached the FBI.
Nancy Guthrie was reportedly abducted from her home near Tucson on February 1. Following her disappearance, two ransom notes were released, with police making the complete texts available in July. One note demanded $4 million, while another suggested that the 84-year-old had already died and issued an apology.
Earlier this month, it was reported that a man from California was sentenced for writing a fake ransom note related to this case, to which he pleaded guilty.
A representative from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department mentioned there is “some skepticism” regarding the validity of this third ransom note, though its specific contents have not been disclosed.
Notably, one of the ransom notes made public in July included intricate details about Nancy’s home, such as a broken backyard floodlight and a white smartwatch found on her bedroom floor, raising questions about its authenticity.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously indicated that authorities hoped releasing these notes might help identify the writer based on unique phrasing or wording.
The current status of Nancy Guthrie remains unknown. One of the earlier ransom notes had claimed she had died, but if this new note is verified, it could hint at her being alive.
The Guthrie family has not publicly addressed the reports concerning this new ransom note but is offering up to $1 million for any information that could lead to Nancy’s return.
The search for the elderly woman continues amid these developments.
