New Russian Drone Attack Results in Three Deaths and 35 Injuries

Kiev, Ukraine

Russian forces have intensified their attacks on Ukraine using drones and various weapons, resulting in three fatalities and several injuries despite ongoing international calls for a ceasefire, according to officials.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that overnight, Russia launched a significant strike involving 63 drones and decoys. They mentioned that air defenses managed to take down 28 drones, but 21 more managed to breach the defenses.

In the eastern Donetsk region, which has been heavily targeted, Ukrainian police noted that two individuals lost their lives and six others were injured over the past day. Additionally, in the southern Herson area, one person was killed, and 14 others sustained injuries.

Ole Snyevbov, the head of the Kharkiv region, indicated that 15 people, including four children, were hurt in the recent drone attack. Kharkiv City Mayor Ihor Terekhov emphasized that Russian drones struck residential neighborhoods and schools, as well as other private properties.

“Kharkiv holds. People are alive. That’s the most important thing,” Terekhov stated.

Recently, the Russian military has unleashed waves of drone and missile attacks, with record launches of nearly 500 drones on Monday. Then, early Tuesday, there was another assault involving 315 drones and seven missiles. These intensified drone attacks coincide with Russian military maneuvers along the eastern and northeastern frontlines over a stretch of more than 1,000 kilometers (over 600 miles).

Although the drone and missile strikes have devastated various regions, areas along the frontlines endure daily assaults from short-range explosive drones and glide bombs.

Ukraine has also retaliated with its own drone strikes. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 52 Ukrainian drones, 41 of which were launched in the Belgorod region, adjacent to Ukraine. Regional head Viacheslav Gladkov stated that three individuals were injured during the Ukrainian attack on Thursday.

This escalation occurs amid discussions about a potential ceasefire. In a speech on June 2nd in Istanbul, negotiators from Russia and Ukraine exchanged starkly different proposals, which both sides viewed as unacceptable, highlighting the complexity of reaching an agreement.

During a meeting of Southeastern European leaders in Odesa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the European Union to strengthen its latest sanctions package against Russia. He claimed that merely lowering the Russian oil price cap from $60 to $45, as suggested, wouldn’t be enough.

“The real change comes with a $30 cap, which could really shift perspectives in Moscow,” Zelensky remarked.

German news agency DPA reported that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius made an unannounced visit to Kiev on Thursday, indicating that the frequency of Russian attacks conveyed Moscow’s lack of interest in a peaceful resolution.

Pistorius expressed that his visit underscores the new German government’s commitment to Ukraine and emphasized the future of support from Germany and other European nations, suggesting that it would extend beyond just industrial cooperation.
