New Nightclub Aims to Break Member-Only Trend in NYC
A new nightclub is set to shake things up in New York City by allowing the public access, pushing back against the member-only trend. Anyone who can get past the black velvet ropes will discover what the nightlife has to offer.
Grupo Gitano, known for its vibrant nightlife, is launching Club Bohemia later this month at Pier 17 in South Street Seaport. With bottle service and stunning views of the Port of New York, it promises to be quite the attraction.
James Gardner, the founder and CEO of Grupo Gitano, expressed the decision to diverge from the typical trend of private clubs. “We decided not to follow the trends of our private member club,” he shared.
“Club Bohemia is envisioned as a champagne house and a dance lounge that hearkens back to the joyous days of New York in the late ’70s and ’90s, celebrating freedom, hedonism, and individuality,” Gardner explained.
The club will be 3,000 square feet, notably smaller than iconic venues like Studio 54 or Limelight, but still requires attendees to pass security checks for entry.
Gardner mentioned, “There’s natural selection, along with black velvet ropes and golden posts. We can draw inspiration from the past but need to push forward and innovate.” The aim is to rekindle the lively atmosphere of New York’s nightlife, where diverse creative minds come together.
Richie Romero, an experienced figure in nightlife, commented on the rise of member-only clubs, suggesting they are adopting a country club approach. He noted that such models are sustainable since membership fees can help cover rent, albeit at a high cost of entry.
In contrast, traditional velvet rope clubs often struggle to profit from bottle service sales. However, successful connections between nightclubs and unique restaurants can create a vibrant atmosphere, reminiscent of what was once common at Studio 54.
Gardner emphasized, “We’re still a business and we sell tables and bottle services. You just have to show that you belong to get in together. This is where creativity shines, not just flashy cards.” Club Bohemia will be operational from 10 PM to 2 AM and can be booked for private events featuring sunset cocktails.
By the end of the month, the club plans to be open from Thursday to Saturday, with intentions to expand its hours. Surprisingly, due to their noise restrictions, the Seaport area is an ideal location for nightlife.
With a “Cool, Downtown” DJ lineup including acts like Dangerous Rose and Tia Mobley, the entertainment promises to be lively. Last month, notable artists like FKA Twigs performed at a private Gitano dinner attended by celebrities.
Gardner, originally from the UK, moved to New York in his early twenties and started in finance before transitioning to fashion—initially launching an online store featuring well-known designers. His love for Mexico led him to establish Gitano in Tulum in 2013, where he created a unique aesthetic filled with vibrant colors and tropical vibes.
After transforming a parking lot into a tropical oasis for a seasonal pop-up, Gitano faced challenges relocating to Governor’s Island but successfully managed to attract many visitors during their stint there.
Now at Seaport, they have created an impressive 14,000 square foot indoor/outdoor dining space. The main room, filled with tropical plants—many saved from the previous location—contrasts with stylish charcoal-grey walls.
Gardner noted, “We managed to save many of the plants from the island and brought them here before winter.” The restaurant has unique design features, including a black and white cement tile floor and chandeliers, aimed at creating a chic yet tropical ambiance.
With a high ceiling and glass doors that open to wonderful views, the Yucatan-inspired decor adds to the atmosphere. The menu crafted by executive chef Sebastian Cacho features signature dishes like Ceviche Gitano, Lobster Tostada, and more. It’s complemented by an array of mezcal cocktails and refreshing non-alcoholic options.
The space accommodates three different bar areas, ensuring there’s plenty of room to enjoy the nightlife. Last year, the brand expanded with a new location in Dubai and plans for a hotel in Tulum, featuring 40 rooms and several villas with private pools.
