New stories of sobriety emerged in 2025 from Disney stars and other celebrities.

Celebrity Sobriety and Dry January

As a new year begins, many people consider participating in Dry January, a trend that encourages abstaining from alcohol for the month. This practice originated in the UK in 2013 via Alcohol Change UK, and it’s often seen as a way to save money or improve health, including better sleep.

Prominent figures like Bradley Cooper, Miley Cyrus, and Tom Holland have recently shared their journeys with sobriety and how it has positively influenced their lives.

Bradley Cooper

In a December interview, Bradley Cooper revealed that his decision to get sober in 2004 was largely inspired by actor Will Arnett. Cooper noted the importance of their candid discussions, stating, “Will took the risk to have those difficult conversations that made me decide to change my life.” He reflected on how Arnett’s life was something he aspired to emulate.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt, during a guest appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast in June, spoke about the importance of attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at the start of his path to sobriety. He expressed appreciation for the honesty he observed there, saying it was a “really special experience.” Initially, he felt shy but learned to be vulnerable over time, stating, “I was almost on my knees… trying anything.” Pitt got sober in 2016, shortly after his breakup with Angelina Jolie.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus discussed her sobriety journey in October, emphasizing how quitting drinking has transformed her approach to life. She shared that being completely present is important to her: “I like to show up 100%… It’s been refreshing.” Since getting sober in 2020, she feels more prepared for challenges and is genuinely enjoying her current life, noting, “I like who I am and what I’m doing.”

Tom Holland

Tom Holland recently celebrated three and a half years of sobriety, describing it as “a brand new identity.” He recounted how entering Dry January in 2022 led him to recognize his drinking patterns, and though he enjoyed drinking, he didn’t like how it affected him the next day. Adopting a sober lifestyle was, in his words, a really tough but necessary journey.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore has also opened up about her journey since achieving sobriety in 2019. She expressed that focusing on actions rather than substances was pivotal in her transformation. Reflecting on the past, she acknowledged that using substances to escape pain was detrimental, calling her decision to quit a significant turning point.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale joyfully celebrated three years of sobriety earlier this year on Instagram, expressing gratitude to those who supported her journey. She emphasized that her experiences since then have felt miraculous, and she encouraged others facing similar challenges to persevere, reminding them that they are not alone.

The stories of these celebrities highlight the varying reasons and the profound impact that sobriety can bring, resonating with many who may be contemplating similar paths.
