United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces targeted Iranian positions following a series of attempted attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation marks a significant moment in ongoing tensions in the region.
CENTCOM communicated via social media that, “Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran. The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region.”
According to various media sources, Iranian forces were also reported to have attempted to launch rockets and deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, U.S. forces struck two IRGC rocket launchers just a day prior. The situation escalated further when the IRGC retaliated with air strikes on U.S. military bases located in Jordan.
A spokesperson for the IRGC declared, “Aggression and crimes will not solve the enemy’s desperation in attempting to weaken the Islamic Republic’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, and every attack will be met with even more devastating responses,” as reported by the state-funded Fars News Agency.
In a reaction to the Iranian assaults on U.S. positions, President Donald Trump emphasized, “We’re going to hit them hard. There will be a response,” during an interview.
