New Family-Friendly TSA Security Lanes Rolling Out
Several airports across the U.S. are introducing special security lanes designed to make family travel easier. This initiative, announced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) back in July, is called “Family on the Fly.” It aims to improve the airport screening experience for families during the often hectic summer travel season.
A TSA representative explained that these family lanes operate similarly to standard ones. However, families can enjoy their own space, allowing them to proceed through security at a more relaxed pace without feeling rushed by others.
Santa Ana’s John Wayne Airport will launch its Family on the Fly lane on August 5, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the TSA to prioritize family needs at airports.
Additionally, TSA is offering a $15 discount on PreCheck registration for families who sign up together. Children under 12 can also benefit when traveling with registered adults, and there are options for those under 17 if specific criteria are met.
The TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are also planning dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for service members and their families. Currently, family lanes are operational at Orlando International Airport in Florida and Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. John Wayne Airport in California introduced its lane in July, according to reports.
A KTLA reporter spoke with families using the new lanes at John Wayne Airport. One parent remarked, “It was so lovely. Very short lines,” highlighting a positive experience just before they reached security.
In addition to the airports already mentioned, planned family lanes will also be available at:
- Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu
- Charleston International Airport (CHS)
- Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
- Rhode Island TF Green International Airport (PVD)
- Luis Muños Marin International Airport (SJU) in Puerto Rico
- Tampa International Airport (TPA)
According to Pete Garcia, TSA Federal Security Director in Orlando, the program is designed to cater to the unique needs of traveling families, offering a more supportive and efficient experience at security checkpoints. He stated, “We are dedicated to making travel smart, safe, and family-friendly.”
