New video reveals when large I-80 sinkhole was discovered in NJ

New Jersey Sinkhole Video Captures Dramatic Moment

A recent video reveals the moment a massive sinkhole consumed part of an interstate in New Jersey.

Body camera footage from a police officer shows the scene at I-80 in Wharton, just a day after Christmas. The officer approached the enormous sinkhole, which had developed unexpectedly.

As the officer arrives, a witness can be heard expressing disbelief, saying, “Look how far it goes… we just passed and said, ‘Holy!'” Another bystander chimed in, remarking, “I’ve never seen anything like this,” as steam appeared to rise from the massive opening.

This sinkhole has resulted in significant road closures since December, creating a giant crater along the shoulder.

Repairs have been underway, though complications arose when additional sinkholes appeared along I-80 in February and March, prolonging the disruptions.

According to authorities, the sinkholes are linked to the area’s mining history, with abandoned mine shafts likely collapsing beneath the road.

The impacted segment of I-80 has affected daily commuters and long-haul drivers traveling between New York City, upstate, and the Midwest. Officials from the New Jersey Department of Transportation anticipate that the road will be fully operational by the end of June.
