Incident Involving Nurse and Federal Agents in Minneapolis
A video making rounds on social media shows Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, in a heated exchange with federal agents in Minneapolis on January 13, just a week prior to his fatal shooting.
According to News Movement, the footage was captured while the crew was documenting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the city, having learned that agents had blocked a road where protesters were present.
The video depicts a man, identified as Pretti, shouting and appearing to spit at an agent stationed in a Ford SUV. He then kicks the car’s taillight, breaking it and causing it to detach.
Following the encounter, a federal agent emerged from the SUV to confront Pretti, attempting to take him down, but he resisted. Other agents soon stepped in, pinning him to the ground.
Reports indicate that federal agents used tear gas and pepper balls on the group of protesters.
After a brief scuffle, Pretti managed to get up and walk away from the scene, with what seemed to be a gun visible in his waistband.
Shortly thereafter, federal agents returned to their vehicles and left the area.
A representative for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that they are currently reviewing the footage.
The Pretti family has announced that they are pursuing legal action related to the incident. It’s worth noting that reports suggest a facial recognition tool from the BBC verified Pretti’s identity in the video with high accuracy.
Steve Schleicher, the attorney for Pretti’s family, emphasized the context in a statement shared by the BBC: “Just one week before Alex was shot—despite posing no threat—he was assaulted by ICE agents. The events of that day do not justify his subsequent death on January 24.”
Meanwhile, conservative commentators have reacted to the video, asserting that it contradicts narratives portraying Pretti as merely a peaceful protester.
Comments from various public figures suggested a shift in perception, labeling Pretti as a violent individual rather than a victim, citing his actions during the incident.
Another video allegedly capturing the same incident shows Pretti using offensive language towards the federal officers and further escalating tensions.
