New Walt Disney animatronic creates family conflict regarding founder's legacy

Disney’s New Animatronics Spark Family Debate

Disney’s Imagineering team is currently developing new animatronics to honor the legacy of Walt Disney, a pioneering figure in the entertainment industry. However, some of his family members are voicing concerns about whether this approach truly celebrates or detracts from his memory.

The upcoming attraction, named “Walt Disney,” will be showcased at the Main Street Opera House. It features magical life, incorporating audio animatronics inspired by the company’s founder.

Joanna Miller, one of Disney’s grandchildren, has spoken out against the animatronics, describing them as “dehumanizing.” In a Facebook post that gained traction, she recounted how her grandfather once expressed a desire not to be commemorated in this way, explaining her feelings to the Los Angeles Times about why this project might not align with his wishes.

After her post gained attention, she had the opportunity to meet with Disney CEO Bob Iger and the Imagineering team, who were receptive to her opinions. While she appreciated their attention, she still felt uneasy about the animatronics themselves.

“I think I’m starting to cry,” Miller shared in her reflections, noting how the portrayal doesn’t truly capture his essence.

In another communication to Iger, she stated, “I strongly feel that the last two minutes with the robots will do much more harm than Grandpa’s legacy,” expressing worries that people might remember the technology rather than the man.

Defending the project, representatives noted that, while anecdotal evidence exists regarding Walt’s views on animatronics, there’s no official documentation to substantiate claims that he would have opposed this tribute.

Following Miller’s comments, the Walt Disney Family Museum issued a statement highlighting that other family members have a more positive outlook on the animatronics project and are actively involved in it. They noted that members of the Disney family were invited to participate in discussions about the attraction’s development.

Statements from family members, like Chris Miller, Walt’s oldest son and a board member of the museum, conveyed admiration for the project’s innovation. He expressed confidence that the animatronics would reflect the grandfather they remember, saying, “The level of innovation exceeds anything we’ve seen before.”

Similarly, Tamara Miller, Disney’s granddaughter and vice president of the museum’s board, expressed her excitement about the project. “This expression in a park built by Grandpa is a fantastic opportunity to educate new audiences about who he was,” she added, looking forward to introducing her kids and grandkids to this portrayal.
