New York City mayor hits Texas governor over his ‘mean-spiritedness’ on immigrant crisis

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) of being “mean” over the immigration crisis, saying he has “destroyed” the lives of people entering the country. .

between him, exterior Adams said Thursday on Good Morning America that the mayor is filing a lawsuit against more than a dozen charter companies because Abbott is “intentionally” putting people on buses and “forcing” them to leave the city. He said he was fighting back.

“We tried to adjust to the mean-spirited nature of this governor who intentionally forces people to leave the city just by putting them on buses,” Adams said. “That's why we're taking legal action. If you look at what he's doing, history will reflect how much he has destroyed people's lives.”

In early January, Mr. Adams announced he would file a lawsuit against 17 shipping companies, seeking $70 million in costs for caring for the influx of immigrants into New York City. Mr. Abbott called the lawsuit “baseless.”

“It is clear that Mayor Adams knows nothing about the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution or the constitutional right to travel recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court,” Abbott said in a Jan. 4 statement.

In April 2022, Mr. Abbott launched a service that shuttles migrants arriving through the southern border to Democratic-led cities by bus. The governor of Texas is protesting the way the Biden administration is handling U.S.-Mexico border crossings.

To combat the surge in migrants crossing the border, Texas has installed razor wire along its border with Mexico. Appearing on “The Dana Loesch Show,” Abbott said the only thing Texas isn't doing to stop people from crossing the border is “shooting people.”

“The only thing we're not doing is we're not shooting people coming across the border, because of course the Biden administration is going to charge us with murder,” Abbott said.

Speaking about the immigration crisis Thursday, Adams said one of the key factors surrounding the issue is the inability of immigrants to “work.”

“Listen, this is a country of immigrants,” Adams said. “The difference between what we did with Ukrainian citizens and other immigrants who came to this great country is that we allowed them to work.”

“This is so anti-American that we're telling thousands of people that you have to come to that country and you can't support your children and your family. It's our That, not who we are as a country, is at the heart of this issue.”
