New York City Vending Machine Offers Free Narcan and Crack Pipes to Residents

New York City has set up vending machines selling free crack pipes, fentanyl test strips, Narcan (an overdose remedy) and condoms.

Public health officials unveiled the machine Monday at 1676 Broadway in Brooklyn and ABC7 in New York. report. The machine was empty in less than 24 hours after installation. according to To new york post.

The machine will cost the city $11,000 to install and will also provide residents with free COVID-19 tests, feminine hygiene products, hygiene kits, vitamin C and first aid kits. Residents can access by simply entering their zip code.

The vending machine is part of the city’s effort to reduce overdose deaths by 15% by 2025, according to the health department. press release.

New York will have 2,668 overdose deaths in 2021, 80% of which were fentanyl-related. According to a press release, 1,370 overdose deaths have been confirmed in the first half of 2022 alone.

Public Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said that every three hours a New Yorker dies of an overdose.

Narcan, or naloxone, provides rapid recovery from an opioid overdose. It can be administered as a nasal spray or injection. New York City’s vending machines are similar to those installed in Philadelphia last year.But it only distributed Narkan, why report.

New York City vending machines are outfitted with “safe smoking kits” that include heavy stems, mouthpieces, pushers, six screens, chore filters and lip balm.

This kit is manufactured by Smoke Works Pipes, a company that claims “pipes reduce harm.”

The company’s website states, “The pipe makes it easy to ‘go low and go slow’.” “Loading a rig takes time and if you are in a hurry you can make mistakes and injure yourself or accidentally overload. You can continue using it.”
