A staggering 800,000 non-citizens are reportedly likely to vote in the New York City election. This week, the court is considering legislation that will allow them to register to vote ahead of the city's election.
New York top coat set listen Politico reports that Tuesday's discussion of the issue. This comes after the appeals court broke the Democratic effort last year to allow non-citizens to vote.
If the Democratic initiative is successful, approximately 800,000 non-citizens of New York City will be allowed to vote in city-level elections, including the mayoral elections in the coming November, the report says.
Supporters of laws that allow non-citizens to vote have argued that these residents are unfairly taxed.
“In five city council districts, non-US citizens make up about a third of the adult population,” the lawyer reportedly wrote in the filing. “Though these New Yorkers pay billions of taxes, they don't talk about local policies regarding public safety, trash collection or housing, or about all the issues that affect daily life.”
Meanwhile, New York City Republicans are reminding officials that they specifically state that the national constitution is granted to “all citizens.”
“It's crazy so it's hard to discuss,” New York Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-24th Senate District) told Politico, adding, “Citizens should vote.” If you are not a citizen of the country, you should not have a say. ”
Last year, the Court of Appeals ruled 3-1 to block laws that allowed non-citizens to vote. The judge's panel ruled that “unrefutable reasoning applies that it is intended that non-citizens be excluded from those entitled to vote.”
The law arrives in a controversial race among Democrats fighting to replace New York Mayor Eric Adams (D).
