New York City Mayor Supports Progressive Candidates in Congressional Races
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has backed three congressional candidates who challenged the traditional Democratic establishment. In a solid show of support, all three overcame their opponents in the recent elections, suggesting Mamdani’s influence is on the rise within the party.
In the latest election, former two-term Congressman Dan Goldman lost to Brad Lander, a candidate aligned with the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialist Movement. Other notable victories included Daliaza Avila Chevalier, who beat incumbent Congressman Adriano Espaira, and Claire Valdez, a socialist and labor organizer, who won the seat left open by a retiring lawmaker.
Mamdani celebrated these victories at an election night gathering, emphasizing that the success of Valdez and others indicates the ongoing strength of his political movement.
“A year ago was not the end of the political movement,” he told followers. “That was the beginning.”
This endorsement reflects Mamdani’s significant sway and hints at a rising tide of progressive ideals within the Democratic Party. Nevertheless, some members express concerns that candidates leaning towards these progressive ideals might have a tough time appealing to moderate voters during the upcoming general election in November.
The election results have also exposed deep rifts within the Democratic Party, particularly on topics like artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies, and the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Before the polls closed, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries played down the idea that the rise of Mamdani-supported candidates would lead to a major shift in the Democratic landscape.
“We agreed to strongly oppose it,” Jeffries commented on Capitol Hill. “There are 215 members of the House Democratic Caucus. A few primaries going one way or another in one or two states will not redefine who we are as House Democrats.”
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to voice his disapproval of the New York Democratic primary outcomes. He tagged Valdez, Lander, and Chevalier as “three solid communists” in a critical post.
“Mayor Mamdani defeated three staunch communists and received massive and universal applause from the fake news media. Congratulations Mayor! Last night I won 16-0 and helped elect a great American patriot, but the media says nothing,” he stated. “For the past two years, my endorsement has won 259 primary wins, almost never lost, and received zero media attention!!! Fake news.”
