New York Governor Kathy Hawkle’s favorability and job approval ratings are at an all-time low, according to a new poll.
A statewide Siena College poll conducted last week showed the Democratic governor’s approval rating at a record low of 44%, 50% disapproved of Hockle’s job as governor, and her favorability rating, which ranges from favorable to unfavorable, is low at 38-49%.
The good news for Haukl is that majorities of voters in both parties support his decision to end New York City’s congestion pricing, which would have imposed steep tolls on New York City commuters. Polls show that 45% of voters approve of his decision, while only 23% disapprove, with 16% taking a neutral stance.
“Despite strong support for Governor Hokull’s decision to hold off on congestion pricing, as well as strong support for the social media bill she pushed, voters are rating Governor Hokull at the lowest level of favorability and approval in nearly three years as governor,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said in a statement.

“Among Democrats, her favorability rating is 2-to-1 and her job approval rating is even higher, but 81% of Republicans and 61% of independents view her unfavorably. Meanwhile, 84% of Republicans and 63% of independents disapprove of the way she’s doing as governor.”
The Siena College poll also found that President Biden’s favorability rating in New York state also fell to a record low of 42%, while he continues to lead the Republican front-runner, former President Trump, by a single digit margin, 47% to 39%.
“Biden maintains the support of three-quarters of Democrats, while Trump has the support of 85% of Republicans and leads Biden among independents, 45% to 28%,” Greenberg said. “The gender gap has widened again, with men backing Trump 46% to 42% and women backing Biden 51% to 33%. White voters are split evenly. Biden holds a commanding lead among non-white voters, but Trump has the support of 29% of black voters and 26% of Latino voters.”
“Two-thirds of voters say they plan to tune in to next week’s debate between Trump and Biden, making it the earliest presidential debate in living memory. It remains to be seen how the debate will affect the race, but the last time a presidential election was this close in New York was in 1988, when Democrat Michael Dukakis defeated Republican George H.W. Bush by just four points, 52% to 48%. The last Republican to win New York was Ronald Reagan in 1984 by eight points, 54% to 46%.”
