New York Democrats consider Mamdani's outreach efforts

New York Democrats are keenly discussing their options as the nomination cycle heats up. Zoran Mamdani, the party’s mayoral candidate, is weighing potential support from more centrist factions.

Amidst this, there’s a cloud of uncertainty. Many in the party are searching for viable alternatives, yet no one seems to fully fit the bill.

Last week, former Governor Andrew Cuomo declared his intention to run as an independent after being overshadowed by Mamdani in the primary race. Still, there’s skepticism among party members regarding his chances, particularly given his controversial past.

Meanwhile, the current mayor, Eric Adams, is also running independently and has a troubled track record that doesn’t endear him to Democratic circles. His association with polarizing figures has made many wary.

Political analysts suggest that the race is too crowded and if the Democrats want any chance at success, one of the candidates, either Adams or Cuomo, might need to step aside.

“Having too many candidates dilutes our chances,” said Grantry Herr from Syracuse University. “If neither drops out, I struggle to see a path for Mamdani.”

He added that if he were in charge of the party, he would encourage a decision between Adams and Cuomo to avoid splitting votes.

Recent polling from HarrisX had Adams leading with 26%, while Cuomo followed closely at 22%. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, also garnered 22% in that survey.

If Adams were to exit the race, some believe Cuomo would have a slight edge over Mamdani according to the same polling data.

Mamdani, aware of the challenges, has been proactively reaching out to business leaders and influential Democrats, aiming to solidify his support base. His strategic meetings have included discussions with figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Hakeem Jeffries.

The feedback from those meetings has been positive, describing them as community-focused and constructive. Upcoming issues such as public safety and anti-Semitism were emphasized in these talks.

Further strengthening his campaign, Mamdani has won support from notable figures within the party, which reflects his ongoing outreach strategy.

Democratic strategist Basil Smickle pointed out that Mamdani’s efforts are showing promise and he seems to resonate well with voters.

Several Democrats express that the party needs new energy, and Mamdani appears to be making that connection. “He’s engaging with people directly, whether through events or social media. He seems genuinely relatable,” noted Eddie Verele, a local resident.

By establishing these connections, Mamdani is potentially carving into the support that would typically lean towards either Cuomo or Adams.

However, some strategists who view the race differently see Adams as the real threat to Mamdani. Susan del Percio, a Republican strategist, believes that while Cuomo’s prospects seem dim, Adams may have a clearer path to contend.

She mentioned that Adams’ reinvention could appeal more to moderate voters, which could work in his favor if done effectively.

On the other hand, there are beliefs that Cuomo could gain traction due to dissatisfaction with Adams’ administration, particularly following allegations of corruption that were ultimately dismissed.

Cuomo’s history, which includes accusations of inappropriate behavior, continues to haunt him. Despite his attempt to restart his campaign with a recent ad, many think he’s out of touch with voters’ concerns.

Strategists contend that, while Mamdani is gaining ground, lingering doubts exist regarding his potential to represent the future of the party. His base could also alienate moderate voters, which could be a liability.

One analyst underscored the challenges: “If I were a Republican strategist, I would see Mamdani winning as a golden opportunity to capitalize on the party’s more extreme positions.”
