New York doll singer David Johansen passed away after quietly fighting Stage 4 cancer for several years, Fox News Digital confirmed.
Johansen's wife, Mara Hennessy, told Fox News Digital on Friday that she “died in a sunny bedroom holding hands with me and my daughter Leah, surrounded by flowers and music.”
“We had an incredible adventure in life together. He was an extraordinary man. I was so grateful for the news of his illness as the past few weeks have been filled with messages and love from my family, friends and fans,” Hennessy said.

In February, Mara and Leah shared that David was battling cancer, and they were looking for support from his fans.

“David has lived with stage 4 cancer for several years. He has undergone chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and surgery, overcame all the side effects and outcomes of various treatments.
“We had a great adventure in life together. He was an extraordinary man.”
“He is nurtured by the love of his wife and daughter, sparring friends, colleagues and fans, trying to keep his troubles a secret. He's always been like this.
“He claims it's because he's half the Norwegian.”
Hennessy explained that the financial burden has hit their families.

“Our family has reached a point where we need more support, we are driving some serious debts to look after our beloved David, and we are facing even more unruly costs.

“David is a legend, but he is also my very real, very sick dad,” she wrote alongside his photo on her Instagram story. “I'm saying a lot, but I think I'm posting a lot about this and I don't need to say it all right now. I know how badly many of our situations are now and how much funding everyone is literally raising, but if you love David and magic, if he brings you into the world, he should read this and share it.

The rear also includes a link to Sweet Relief Musician Fund. The organization will help raise funds for musicians struggling with health issues.
His daughter explained on the website that five years ago Johansen had advanced cancer and he had Brain tumor.
“We've had complications since then. He and his mother Mara are generally very private people, so he has never published a diagnosis, but we feel we are now forced to share this because of the increasingly serious financial burden our family faces,” the website says.

According to Leah, things got worse around Thanksgiving.

“What's worse, the day after Thanksgiving, David went down the stairs and broke his back in two places,” she wrote on the website.

Johansen has had surgery, but Leah says, “David is bedridden and incapacitated. Due to trauma, David's illness progresses exponentially, and his mother is taking care of his watch.”

Besides, New York doll, Johansen is known for his alter ego, Buster Poindexter. In 1987, his song “Hot Hot Hot” was a Billboard hit.
