Hochul Booed at Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony
New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced a chorus of boos on Wednesday while attending the opening ceremony of the Ryder Cup at the Bethpage Black course on Long Island. During the event, NBC’s Carson Daly introduced the guests, and, as soon as he mentioned Hochul’s attendance, the crowd reacted negatively.
On the televised broadcast, some nearby applauded as Hochul waved an American flag. However, the boos were clearly audible. Interestingly, one fan was even heard shouting, “Please leave Cathy here!” Hochul maintained a smile despite the backlash.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York, took to social media to mock Hochul, describing the booing as “cruel” and remarking, “A bad day for the worst governor in America.” This certainly adds an interesting layer to the political atmosphere surrounding the event.
Hochul’s appearance came just before former President Donald Trump was set to make his own appearance at the Ryder Cup. Trump has been known to engage with PGA players recently, trying to mend relations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
In other developments at the event, Scotty Scheffler remarked that Trump’s involvement was significant. “It’s been a tough few weeks for us to have some things that we do for our country,” he said, emphasizing the importance of representing the U.S. in golf. Scheffler praised Trump for his love of the game and noted that he often receives messages from him following successful tournaments.
In his reflection, Scheffler shared that Trump treats everyone with respect, whether they’re a caddy or a high-ranking official. “It’s clear he values every individual,” he commented, which shows a personal side to this well-known figure.
As the Ryder Cup continues, the dynamics between players, political figures, and the public add a fascinating layer to the ongoing tournament.
