Islanders Invite Fans to Design New Third Jersey
The New York Islanders are embarking on a unique initiative that no other NHL team has attempted. They’re handing over the reins to their fans, asking them to design the next third jersey.
It’s an interesting approach. Perhaps this time, letting fans take part will reduce complaints about the final product… although, honestly, they probably still will.
On Wednesday, the team announced that fans can submit their jersey designs. Those chosen will win a “VIP gameday experience” when the new jerseys launch during the 2027-28 season.
Of course, inviting the internet to create something usually leads to amusing results (I mean, remember “Boaty McBoatface”?). That’s why the Islanders are providing several design templates and logos from their history on their website to guide fans.
They’re even allowing for the much-talked-about “Fishsticks” logo to make a comeback.
As for colors, the team is encouraging creativity beyond their traditional blue, orange, and white. It’s great to see the Islanders motivating fans to think about their favorite colors and get involved.
I think this is a fantastic idea. The Islanders seem to be saying, “Alright fans, think you can do better? Show us!”
The history of the Islanders’ third jerseys hasn’t been particularly impressive. Sure, I appreciate the various versions of the Fisherman Sweater, but honestly, many just miss the mark.
The black jerseys worn at Barclays Center had a certain appeal, though they might have felt a tad too simple.
And then, there was that unusual design from 2011 to 2014, which was black and gray with a wordmark above the player number. I’m still puzzled by that choice.
I have always loved the Isles’ Stadium Series jerseys, but I’m really hoping to see a third jersey in the upcoming seasons that delivers more flair and personality, especially after last season’s just plain “ISLES” jersey.
Here’s to hoping that fans create something truly worthy for this historic franchise… but let’s be real, the Fisherman may still reign supreme in the end.
