New York Liberty of the WNBA valued at $450 million, setting a new global record

Liberty Franchise Achieves Record Valuation

The Liberty franchise has reached a significant milestone, establishing a new global standard as women’s sports gain traction. Recent investments have propelled its total valuation to an impressive $450 million.

This impressive figure positions Liberty as the premier franchise in the WNBA, surpassing previously established team valuations. It’s quite remarkable, really. In fact, Liberty is now recognized as the most valuable women’s sports franchise worldwide.

To put it in perspective, Chelsea’s women’s soccer team was recently valued at around $326 million, while the WNBA’s Dallas Wings had a valuation of about $208 million. So, Liberty’s growth is quite substantial.

Interestingly, the exact percentage of ownership at Liberty that is available for sale remains unclear. Reports suggest that this may have been discussed back in mid-October, but the exact details surrounding the number of involved investors are still unknown. It’s a bit of a mystery, really.

Of course, any sale will need the green light from the WNBA’s board of directors, which includes the majority of team owners in the league. This adds a layer of oversight to the process.

Just a year ago, Liberty was valued at around $200 million. The new funding is expected to support the development of a state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot training facility in Brooklyn, slated to open in 2027. Plans for this facility were first unveiled in March, and it’s being touted as the first space designed specifically by players for players.

The upcoming training center is set to include a variety of amenities, like two regulation-sized practice courts, a recovery wing, and a spacious strength training area. It’s even supposed to have private suites for players instead of the traditional locker rooms, along with makeup and hair studios. That’s quite a shift from what we’re used to.

Clara U Tsai, who, along with her husband Jo, purchased the team in 2019, has openly stated her ambition to elevate Liberty to a billion-dollar valuation within the next decade. Given the recent capital influx, it seems she’s well on her way to making that vision a reality.
