New York strip should be renamed Texas strip, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says

The lieutenant governor of Texas wants to change the name of the steak cut.

In a social media post, Texas Lt. Dan Patrick suggested that the New York strip should be renamed in honor of Lone Star State.

Patrick expressed his thoughts on the X on Friday after meeting with the Texas Cattle Feeder Association.

When several members said their favorite cut was a New York strip, Patrick wanted to know “Why didn't we call it a 'Texas Strip' because New York has mostly dairy cows?”

“Just because a New York restaurant called Texas Beef in the 19th century was named a New York strip doesn't mean that we need to continue doing that,” Patrick wrote.

Patrick went on to say that a resolution will be submitted in the Texas Senate to “officially change” the “New York Strip” name to “Texas Strip.”

He said the restaurant would be asked to “change the name of this meat the next time I reprint the menu.”

Grocers are asked to do the same, hoping to “catch nationwide and around the world.”

“In a world filled with serious issues that we deal with every day at the Texas Capitol, this simple resolution will help us sell Texas beef better,” writes Patrick. “That's good for the cattle industry in Texas.”

Patrick has been the lieutenant governor of Texas since 2015.

Under the provisions of the Texas Constitution, the lieutenant governor is also the Speaker of the Texas Senate.

“After the session ends this summer, I might be on a short cruise across the US Gulf and have a juicy medium rare Texas strip,” writes Patrick.
