When Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s wife hung an upside-down American flag in her home, The New York Times was not pleased.
Now The New York Times is once again furious with the judge, this time for hanging a pine tree flag with the words “Appeal to Heaven” outside his New Jersey shore home, which the Times claims is a popular symbol among the January 6 “insurrectionists.”
The New York Times clearly has no idea what they’re talking about, but luckily Glenn Beck He certainly knows what he’s talking about and is here to give them a much-needed history lesson.
“It’s been a symbol of New England since the 16th century. Why? Because New England had big pine trees. Why was that important? Because New England didn’t have any huge pine trees, so they could build ships to send to England and other countries with huge masts that no one could find,” Glenn explains.
The flag is also a symbol of the Iroquois “Great Peacemaker,” who convinced warring nations to bury their weapons under pine trees.
“So it’s also the symbol of the peace tree,” Glenn says. “It appeared on currency issued by the Massachusetts Bay Colony and became a symbol of the iron resistance of the colony, but also today a symbol of multi-tribal support for independence,” he adds.
The phrase “Call upon Heaven” is also an expression of revolutionary right, and Glenn jokes that it comes from “the wicked murderer John Locke.”
“The quick summary is that the flag has the pine tree as a symbol of trade. It is also a symbol of peace among Native Americans. Additionally, the flag’s ‘Appeal to Heaven’ comes from something written by John Locke in 1690, which was a refutation of the divine right of kings,” he explains.
Glenn has his own interpretation of the flag, which he says is not a symbol of rebellion.
“I’ve always interpreted that flag as a plea to heaven for common sense and help: God please help us. It’s exactly the same as the upside-down flag,” he explained, adding, “We are in distress, please turn to God and plead for mercy and guidance. This is an incredibly controversial gesture.”
