The New York Times has learned that a top labor organizer at the paper posted on X that Zionists are “genocidalists” and “depraved monsters,” sparking outrage within the editorial board.
In comments reviewed by The Post, Nastaran Mohit, organizing director for the New York News Guild, which represents Times employees under a union contract, posted comments such as “Zionists know how to kill people” and called the Gray Lady itself a “dilapidated institution.”
In response to a post celebrating The Times winning the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Gaza war, she wrote that it was “utterly reprehensible” that the paper should receive the award.
She also reposted a video of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying that “Hamas doesn’t care about civilians” with the caption, “Objective lies, bloodthirsty barbarians… rot in hell.”
The union’s sanctioned anti-Semitism has turned politics within The Times’ editorial department into a slow-burning “dumpster fire,” one employee told The Post.
And angry staff, particularly Jewish employees, some of whom resent the fact that part of their salary goes to a trade union, are asking why they are funding the “enemies” of journalism.
“It’s clear that some of the people we hire to speak for us hate us, because they’re attacking not just The New York Times, but journalism in general,” another veteran staffer told The Post.
“Why do unions continue to antagonize their members, the groups that pay the most union dues?”
“The people who tweeted this should not have any role in the journalists union, period,” said another journalist, adding that he was yet to speak out publicly for fear of retribution.
“I was warned by other reporters that I would face repercussions even if I spoke up and asked Guild staff to remain nonpartisan,” he said. “Ask to be centrist or politically neutral is considered taboo.”
Mohit is Featured in a Teen Vogue profile in 2020 She listed her morning routine as “a bowl of oatmeal, flaxseed and vegan protein powder,” but she’s not the only one to post inflammatory comments about Jews.
Another reposted an image, later proven false, of Gazans eating fine dining in an upscale Israeli restaurant while they were starving to death.
A third union member, Lena Ruth Solow, posted on X in February that Israel’s attacks on Gaza were a “genocide.”
This comes as the union is asking New York Times staff to vote on whether to implement a permanent increase in union dues from 1.4% to 1.75%.
Representatives for Mohit, the union and The Times were not immediately available for comment.
Times employees received ballots this week to vote on whether to increase membership dues.
“For many people, it raised questions about who is looking out for our interests,” a Times staffer said.
“They are [the union employees] They are activists who don’t seem to care that their actions and words can cause real harm to the people they represent.”
This is not the first time New York Times staff have had trouble with the union that represents them.
In December, a group of journalists formed the so-called “Pro-Independence Council” to stop the News Guild from interfering with journalists’ independence.
