Yankees Secure $2.6 Billion Financing Deal
The New York Yankees made headlines on Tuesday with the announcement of a $2.6 billion financing arrangement with Mark Rowan’s Apollo Sports Capital. This substantial deal is viewed as a way to support the growth of the MLB powerhouse while ensuring the Steinbrenner family retains control.
The agreement, which combines credit and capital, marks one of the largest private capital investments into a baseball franchise recently. It’s anticipated to be finalized in the coming days.
Al Tairis, CEO of Apollo Sports Capital, will be joining the Board of Directors for Yankee Global Enterprises. To accommodate him, an additional seat will be added. Meanwhile, Hal Steinbrenner will continue his role as the managing general partner and remain the primary MLB representative for the team.
However, it remains uncertain if this new funding will enable the Yankees to make more player investments, something many fans are hoping for.
In a statement, Steinbrenner expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, saying, “We welcome Apollo to the Yankees family. We are continually looking for ways to strengthen our positioning, and this opportunity allows us to explore strategic initiatives.”
Tairis praised the Yankees as one of the most iconic sports teams and expressed eagerness in supporting the organization’s pursuit of excellence and championship standards.
This financing comes at a time when the Yankees are looking for additional resources for their operations and expansion efforts. Besides the Yankees, their holding company, Yankee Global Enterprises, also owns the YES Network, Legend Hospitality, New York City’s Major League Soccer team, NYC FC, and Italy’s AC Milan. Officials indicated that this new funding might also benefit these associated companies.
It’s worth noting that Major League Baseball restricts a single private equity fund to 15% of a club’s ownership, though Apollo’s exact share has not been disclosed. Forbes had recently valued the Yankees at $8.5 billion.
Apollo Sports Capital functions as the long-term capital platform of Apollo Global Management, which manages around $1.5 trillion in assets. The organization has broadened its sports investments, aiming to acquire management rights for Atlético Madrid in 2025.
The deal is expected to provide the Yankees with increased financial flexibility as franchise values keep soaring across professional sports.
The Steinbrenner family has owned the Yankees since 1973, when they purchased the franchise from CBS for $10 million.
This agreement wraps up a series of confidential negotiations that kicked off earlier this year, with both parties describing the outcome as a fitting partnership between a storied franchise and a sports-focused equity partner.
Yankee Global Enterprises and Apollo Sports Capital are optimistic about deepening their collaboration in the future as they explore further opportunities together.
