New Yorkers left wet over the weekend should prepare for more severe weather on Monday. The strong winds that are blowing into the city with gusts can knock unsuspecting pedestrians off their feet.
Winds of about 20 miles per hour are expected to begin around 8 a.m. Monday morning, continue until 6 p.m., and taper off around 8 p.m. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 50 mph and could reach 60 mph depending on elevation.
“Wind gusts in the Northeast tomorrow will be in the 40 to 50 mph range,” said FOX Weather Meteorologist Cody Blood.
“Wind gusts near 90 miles per hour are still possible, but will occur primarily at higher elevations. Although these are impressive gusts, the strength of the winds may not directly cause personal injury. , I don’t think it will fall over.”
According to Gothamist, weather warnings have been issued across the city due to strong winds, and the city has closed bridges to empty tractor-trailers and trucks to avoid possible crashes.
Brown said in suburban boroughs and suburbs, falling trees can cause power outages, and winds can prevent crews from making repairs in a timely manner.
“Due to the recent amount of rain, falling trees could be a problem. The ground is saturated so it may not take long to knock down a tree,” he said.
“It’s unclear how many customers may be without power, but the winds are so strong that it could take hours for crews to restore service.”
Temperatures on Monday will be in the low 40s, with gusty winds likely to make it even colder.
The winds come after a wet weekend, with drizzle continuing throughout Saturday and turning into a downpour overnight, dumping up to 2 inches of rain across the city.
A coastal flood advisory has been issued for waterfront areas around the city until midday Sunday.
