Newcastle have lost central defender Sven Botman for almost nine months with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, with the Dutchman having a pre-existing condition aggravated by playing against the advice of the club doctor earlier this season.

Sandro Tonali, who was handed a 10-month worldwide ban by the Italian Football Federation this week for breaching gambling rules, faces new charges from the FA, which could see his suspension extended. One thing became clear.
Manager Eddie Howe urged the FA not to throw books at the midfielder, pointing out that Tonali has a gambling problem that he is currently working on and has already received enough punishment. It’s hard to agree with Howe on this point, although it’s clearly in Howe’s best interests to get the Italian back as soon as possible.
