Quarterback Competition Heats Up for the Cleveland Browns
Shedeur Sanders is among several quarterbacks vying for a starting position with the Cleveland Browns. Although Joe Flacco boasts the most experience within the group, Kenny Pickett has also made NFL starts. Both Dillon Gabriel and Sanders entered the league as part of the Browns’ 2025 draft class. Deshaun Watson pledged to return “more than ever” after evaluating his Achilles injury back in January, but it’s still uncertain if he will see any playing time in the upcoming season.
The crowded quarterback situation pushed Sanders to primarily take snaps with the designated second team during the Browns’ mini-camp on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Flacco, Pickett, and Gabriel were given opportunities with the first team, as reported by ESPN.
Despite being sidelined to the second team, Sanders appeared unfazed. He shared with reporters that his outlook would help prevent negativity from creeping in regarding his current situation.
“Life is just based on how you see different things,” the 23-year-old expressed. “You can choose to view fewer reps negatively, or when you get the chance to play, be proactive and jump in.” He emphasized that each opportunity to step onto the field is crucial, insisting there shouldn’t be any excuses regarding his performance.
Most of Sanders and Gabriel’s snaps during practice centered around team drills. Although Gabriel got some chances with the first team, Sanders remained primarily in a backup role.
When reflecting on his rookie year in the NFL, Sanders highlighted his goal of being an excellent teammate and prepared in every aspect. “I aim to be the best teammate and learn as much as possible. I’ve matured and gained insights thanks to the veterans in the room,” he mentioned.
Looking ahead, the Browns are set to kick off their regular season on September 7th against AFC North rival Cincinnati Bengals.
