Nampa Mayor Passes Away After Medical Emergency

The recently elected mayor of Nampa, Idaho’s third-largest city, has sadly died following a medical incident. This occurred during a town hall meeting.

Rick Hogaboam, age 47, collapsed on Wednesday while attending a Treasure Valley Partnership gathering in Eagle, Idaho.

The Republican mayor had only been in office for four months when the emergency took place. Both Eagle Mayor Brad Pike and Police Chief Travis Ruby rushed to assist him as shock swept over the room.

The next day, a statement was released on Facebook by the City of Eagle regarding the incident.

“Mayor Pike, having served as a firefighter, was the first to respond; Eagle Police Chief Ruby followed closely behind,” the city noted. “911 was contacted, CPR was provided, and EMS arrived quickly, but, unfortunately, their efforts were to no avail.”

On Thursday, the Ada County Coroner’s Office confirmed Hogaboam’s death, attributing it to cardiac tamponade.

This condition is a serious medical emergency where fluid, blood, or pus accumulates in the sac surrounding the heart, hindering its ability to fill properly and causing a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Symptoms may include sharp chest pain, difficulty breathing, lightheadedness, a high pulse, and fainting. Various factors can lead to this condition, such as chest injuries, infections, and even complications from heart procedures.

Before his role as mayor, Hogaboam held various positions, including Canyon County Clerk and substitute state senator. He served as the 31st mayor of Nampa.

His city biography described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and visionary for Nampa, wishing for a community where families flourish and residents feel pride in their city.

“This brief bio barely captures the extensive life and contributions of Mayor Rick Hogaboam, yet it reflects his skills, priorities, and values. He will be immensely missed,” it stated.

The morning following Hogaboam’s death, Idaho Senate Chaplain Doug Armstrong paid tribute to him in front of the state legislature. Armstrong recalled Hogaboam’s decade-long service as a senior pastor and his leadership role at the Lifeline Pregnancy Center.

“I knew Rick well, and the most significant aspects of his life were his faith in Jesus Christ and his devotion to his family,” Armstrong remarked. “He had a deep faith.”

Armstrong then offered a prayer for Hogaboam, his wife, Mimi, their five children, and their grandchild.

In a gesture of respect, Governor Brad Little ordered flags in Idaho and at the Capitol to be lowered until sunrise on March 23rd, honoring Mayor Hogaboam.

“We are heartbroken over the sudden passing of Nampa Mayor Rick Hogaboam. He served with genuine dedication to the public and a strong commitment to the people of Nampa. He truly cared for his community and worked tirelessly to improve it. During this challenging time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, city staff, and the larger Nampa community as they cope with this significant loss,” stated Little.
