News anchor looks back on 25 years with the network for its 30th anniversary

Decades ago, I faced a tough decision—leaving my job as a trial lawyer to chase a far less certain path in television news. My mother wisely advised, “The worst thing you can do is choose the easy course and be haunted by regret over what might have been.”

I took her advice to heart. Sure, change was daunting, but the thought of not trying was even scarier. So, I left my stable, well-paying attorney role in San Francisco for the unknown. Looking back, I realize I was perhaps a bit naïve about the slim odds of success.

Change, I learned, can be painful. It’s often discouraging. Still, the fear of failing pushed me to keep going. Transitioning from local news to bigger networks felt like trudging through a tough wilderness, reminiscent of those challenging times Winston Churchill described. Doubts always seemed to linger nearby.

But everything shifted when I joined Fox News nearly 25 years ago. It was a pivotal moment, and I’ve felt grateful ever since to have a part in a network that truly transformed television news.

From the outset, it was clear the people at Fox were different. Their dedication and passion were obvious. A shared commitment to excellence was the foundation. We supported each other, creating a sense of community.

However, at the core of our network are the viewers. They tune in consistently, trusting what we present to them. They engage with the content, and it’s our job to maintain that trust by delivering quality news and information.

Being a 24-hour news channel means this dedication is crucial yet challenging to sustain. Even so, I continue to be impressed by my colleagues’ boundless energy, creativity, and intelligence. They are committed and enthusiastic, even when the circumstances may not warrant it. That’s a rare combination.

Over these years, I’ve reported on countless stories—the War on Terror, hurricanes, financial crises, elections, and even the COVID-19 pandemic. Fox always encouraged me to step out of the newsroom, which was refreshing.

My experiences have led to profound growth that I hadn’t envisioned. For instance, I volunteered as a correspondent during the Iraq War in 2003 and was embedded with the 3rd Infantry Division. Those brave young soldiers treated me well, a reminder of the high regard I have for our military.

The world has changed significantly since I first entered the Fox studios in 2002. America is now more digital and diverse. Technology has reshaped our everyday lives, and where the Dow Jones Industrial Average once hovered around 10,000, it’s now above 50,000.

Throughout my tenure at Fox, I’ve taken on multiple roles—anchor, reporter, host, columnist, and most recently, a legal analyst. Along the way, I’ve written four books. Honestly, I’ve grown in ways I never thought possible, all thanks to Fox, and I’ve cherished every moment.

This journey has certainly diverged from my youthful expectations as a fresh law school graduate. It has turned out to be more rewarding than I ever anticipated. I’ve learned invaluable lessons; sometimes taking a risk pays off. And it’s always wise to heed your mother’s advice.

So, I want to express heartfelt thanks to Fox News and a sincere congratulations on its 30th anniversary!
