News on man who fell into a coma after removing an ingrown hair

Hopeful Update on Man’s Recovery from Severe Condition

The sister of a man initially thought to be ‘brain dead’ and given just a four percent chance of survival after removing an ingrown hair has shared some encouraging news about his recovery.

Back in 2022, Steven Spinale, a 36-year-old from the U.S., did something that many of us might find familiar: he plucked an annoying ingrown hair.

What seemed like an ordinary act would turn out to be life-altering.

After he pulled out the hair from his groin, Steven started feeling quite unwell. Doctors were puzzled about what was causing his sudden illness.

It wasn’t until his condition worsened and he required life support that the doctors uncovered the serious nature of his health issues.

He had developed sepsis.

This extreme response occurs when the body fights an infection, often leading to organ damage and can be fatal without prompt medical care.

Sepsis symptoms can be hard to detect, with health guidelines recommending immediate emergency treatment for anyone experiencing unusual skin discoloration or confusion.

In Steven’s case, the sepsis stemmed from a rare bacterial infection triggered by the ingrown hair. The bacteria invaded his system, damaging his organs significantly.

While hospitalized, he also contracted influenza A, double pneumonia, and even acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), plus he suffered a small stroke when the infection reached his heart.

Given the multitude of life-threatening complications, he was placed in a medically-induced coma, was likely declared ‘brain dead,’ and faced alarming odds of survival.

Yet, in an incredible twist, Steven regained consciousness and began to recover. His family has been keeping track of his progress, sharing updates through social media.

In a TikTok posted in November, his sister Michelle showcased his recovery milestones, including moments from physiotherapy, eating, and even learning to walk again.

More recent photos show Steven enjoying life after leaving the hospital, spent out fishing with family.

“We never lost hope,” she mentioned in another TikTok featuring images of him in the ICU and then waking up. “And luckily, he’s alive today.”

“We kept our faith. Thank God we did because look at him now,” she expressed, emphasizing that “doctors aren’t the final word.”
