Newsboys React to Misconduct Allegations Against Former Frontman
On Thursday, four members of Newsboys addressed allegations of sexual misconduct related to their former lead singer, Michael Tate. Jeff Frankenstein, Jodie Davis, Duncan Phillips, and Adam Age released a joint statement following a report that detailed claims from three men who indicated that Tate made unwelcome sexual advances when they were in their 20s. Frankenstein and Phillips have been part of the band since the early ’90s, while Davis took a break in the 2000s and Agee joined in 2023.
“Upon learning about the accusations against Michael, which include substance abuse and inappropriate sexual behavior, our hearts broke,” the statement said. “Primarily, we want to emphasize our concern for the victims who chose to come forward with their experiences. If you’re a victim, we encourage you to take action. Do not accept any form of sexual assault.”
The members noted, “We are husbands and fathers, with a total of 14 children among us. Our families make many sacrifices as we dedicate our lives to making music that honors God. I feel, well, deceived over the past fifteen years.”
The statement continued, reflecting on Tate’s departure from the band in January, where he mentioned living a “double life.” They expressed disbelief at the gravity of the situation.
Tate had been a prominent figure for younger fans, but for older audiences, Peter Furler was the defining frontman until he left in 2009. The band’s original lead singer, John James, was active during the late ’80s and ’90s before his exit in 1997.
