NewsNation’s Dan Abrams leaving show — Chris Cuomo could get slot

NewsNation anchor Dan Abrams says he will exit the prime-time show early next year. This could allow Chis Cuomo to move into the coveted slot.

Abrams announced Thursday that he will step down from hosting “Dan Abrams Live,” which airs at 9 p.m. ET on the upstart cable news channel, in early February, citing a busy schedule.

Mr. Cuomo, who is joining Mr. Abrams on NewsNation's nightly lineup, has long been rumored to want to take back the CNN show's previous start time and move it to 9 p.m.

After being ousted from CNN, Cuomo joined NewsNation in 2022 with a multi-year contract. Network announced earlier this week.

The newspaper has reached out to Mr. Cuomo for comment.

NewsNation announced it will name Abrams' replacement early next year.

Abrams said he plans to remain with the network, but will have to scale back his schedule.

“As you may know, I also host a weekend show called 'On Patrol Live' that tracks police in real time. I host a daily radio show on Sirius I’m appearing as a legal analyst,” he told viewers on Thursday.

“But in my on-air role, I spend more time on this show than anything else, and although it's hard for me to admit it, it's not realistic to do this show for a week while running. Not only will my business grow.”

Abrams signed a multi-year deal with NewsNation last year and helped establish a new identity for the network under ownership by local television giant Nexstar, which rebranded the station from WGN America to become a 24-hour cable news station. changed to

The little-known network has gained momentum since its launch four years ago, expanding its primetime lineup by 92% and averaging 115,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen.

While left-leaning rivals MSNBC and CNN have seen ratings declines, NewsNation has seen ratings rise after the election.

The station has also benefited from the post-election decline of its left-wing rivals CNN and MSNBC. In November, NewsNation's primetime ratings increased 25% month-over-month to 111,000 total viewers.

Meanwhile, during the same period, CNN's prime-time total viewership was down 13% to 725,000 viewers, and MSNBC's ratings were down 22% to just under 1.1 million.

FOX News continued to dominate with a 16% ratings increase and just under 3.2 million total viewers.
