Newsom criticizes Padilla’s dismissal: ‘Trump and his supporters are out of control’

Newsom slams Padilla removal: ‘Trump and his shock troops are out of control’

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the removal of Senator Alex Padilla from a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Chris Noem, describing the Trump administration as “out of control.”

Video footage captured the incident, showing several individuals restraining Padilla and subsequently forcing him out of the room. He was later seen on the ground, handcuffed.

In a post, Newsom referred to Padilla as one of the “most decent people” he knows, expressing outrage over the event, labeling it “dictatorial and shameful.” He remarked, “This has to be over now,” and shared the video of Padilla’s removal.

Padilla, on the ground surrounded by federal agents, remarked, “If you can handcuff a US senator for asking questions, just imagine what they’ll do to you.” Newsom also urged Republican leaders to denounce the incident.

He specifically called out several prominent Republicans, questioning their stance on the matter and referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson and others, asserting, “He has a spine.”

Noem stated she would talk to Padilla after the press conference, emphasizing that as a leader or civil servant, it’s inappropriate to prevent meaningful conversation.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security later noted that Noem and Padilla had a brief meeting, labeling the senator’s actions as “disrespectful political theatre” and claiming that the Secret Service mistook Padilla for a threat.

Padilla introduced himself and attempted to ask a question, but the situation escalated quickly. President Trump and border official Tom Homan indicated that state and local leaders could face arrest if they defy federal laws amid rising tensions with the media and fellow California Democrats.

Monday, Trump expressed support for Newsom, who is facing potential arrest, after the governor commented on protests concerning immigration in Los Angeles. Trump acknowledged Newsom while criticizing him for being “grossly incompetent.”

Homan later commented that the idea of arresting Newsom was “disproportionately blown out of proportion,” clarifying there was no immediate threat but warning if Newsom obstructs enforcement efforts, there could be consequences.
