On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President Trump for what he termed “brazen abuse of power” in deploying troops to Los Angeles. He suggested that political opponents were deliberately contributing to the turmoil in the city.
During a speech that evening, Newsom encouraged protesters to remain peaceful amid widespread lawlessness. Mayor Karen Bass had recently imposed a curfew in downtown areas affected by riots and looting.
This military presence was a response to escalating issues following federal actions against undocumented immigrants in the city, which started last Friday. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading Trump to send 4,000 National Guard troops, along with 700 Marines, to confront the unrest.
Newsom expressed concern over Trump’s actions, stating, “This valiant abuse of power by a sitting president risks the safety of our people, our officers, and even the National Guard.”
He added that Trump’s decision to increase the troops’s deployment only inflamed tensions further, indicating this escalation was a calculated move.
While acknowledging the initial outbreak of protests, Newsom noted that local authorities were primarily managing the situation before federal intervention occurred.
Trump’s involvement heightened anxiety, leading Newsom to describe the left-leaning government’s response as “Theatre for Public Safety.” He mentioned that legal steps are being considered to challenge the controversial military deployment.
As Newsom voiced his frustrations regarding Trump’s role, the President was at Fort Bragg pledging to “liberate” Los Angeles.
Trump claimed the federal government would utilize all available resources to restore order and curb violence.
Los Angeles has seen chaotic events over the weekend, characterized by intense protests, looting, vandalism, and confrontations with law enforcement.
Authorities already arrested more than 200 individuals in response to the unrest.
Newsom appealed to protesters, urging them to avoid resorting to violent actions.
“Let me be clear: if you incite violence or destroy our community, you will face consequences. Such criminal behavior will not be tolerated,” he stressed.
