California Governor Discusses DSA Influence on Democratic Party

In an interview aired on Monday’s “PBS NewsHour,” California Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are influencing the Democratic platform. He highlighted that DSA advocates recognize the urgency of climate change, emphasizing the need for energy security and a transition away from fossil fuels, which he views as a mainstream Democratic position.

Co-host Amna Nawaz inquired about how Democrats could regain control of Congress, remarking on the significant primary season the party has recently experienced. She pointed out the success of DSA candidates, such as Donavan McKinney in Michigan and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania, as evidence of a platform that is invigorating the party’s base. She asked if these ideas should be incorporated into the broader Democratic agenda.

Newsom affirmed this notion, stating that there is an ongoing effort to remove money from politics, a cause he has championed for many years. However, Nawaz interjected, noting a perceived disconnect between some party leaders and the DSA candidates.

In response, Newsom acknowledged that while there may be some distance, the ideas themselves are closely aligned. He expressed his support for universal healthcare and Medicare for All, noting these views are prevalent within the party, as confirmed by polling. He reiterated that key issues like reducing costs and tackling climate change align with DSA priorities, indicating these are becoming mainstream within the Democratic Party. Newsom reflected on the labels used to describe these movements, suggesting they have been part of the party’s fabric for years, dating back to when they were referred to as progressives or part of the Green Party, which he had also previously contested against. He described this dynamic as a healthy discussion within the party and not something that concerns him significantly.
