Newsom Maintains Rejection of Antisemitism at UCLA: 'Fine for What?'

Newsom’s Ongoing Controversy at UCLA

California Governor Gavin Newsom has faced criticism regarding anti-Semitic incidents reported at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He continues to downplay these issues while acknowledging, somewhat indirectly, the civil rights violations that Jews and Israeli students experienced during the previous Trump administration, which even led to a substantial fine aimed at reform.

Recent recordings and observations noted by reporters and UCLA administrators detail the anti-Semitic sentiments expressed within certain campus circles—these were also accompanied by attacks on the civil rights of others, including journalists who faced assaults.

Federal judges have voiced concerns regarding UCLA’s actions, specifically referencing a decision from August 2014 that highlighted the exclusion of Jewish students. These students were marginalized on campus due to their unwillingness to denounce their faith, a situation that starkly opposes the constitutional right to religious freedom. The ruling emphasized that the university has a responsibility to protect all students from discrimination, even if the actions stem from third-party groups.

Despite California’s history as a “free” state since 1850, Newsom has been reluctant to impose penalties for UCLA’s behavior. He even formed a committee to examine possible reparations for slavery but has dismissed the idea of fines related to the university’s anti-Semitic atmosphere.

In a rather surprising turn, he indicated he would resign rather than agree to a settlement for these accusations during what many regard as a tumultuous period in 2024.

This week, reports surfaced about Newsom’s remarks regarding the situation. He expressed frustration over the notion of accepting a financial settlement, questioning what it signifies for the wider discourse surrounding these issues. Newsom also commented on Trump’s prior connections with individuals known for anti-Semitic rhetoric, highlighting the contradictory nature of discussing such matters seriously while having affiliations that reflect poorly.

Furthermore, Newsom’s future political ambitions might complicate his stance. He appears to be navigating a path in an increasingly polarizing political landscape, working to maintain support from a party that has shown growing hostility towards Israel as the 2026 presidential election approaches.
