Newsom reveals ‘Liberation Day’ event to combat gerrymandering

Newsom announces 'Liberation Day' event in gerrymandering fight

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, announced on Wednesday that he and several local party members will hold a prominent press conference aimed at opposing legislative plans to increase Texas’s number of congressional seats by five.

“Donald Trump is in for a rough day,” Newsom commented in a post.

The president had previously mentioned that Republicans have a claim to additional seats, implying that federal agents could pursue Democrats who have left Texas to ensure that unfavorable votes do not succeed.

Newsom, along with Governors JB Pritzker of Illinois and Kathy Hochul of New York, has collaborated with the state legislatures to strategize on adding Democratic seats to the House through a process of rezoning.

This approach necessitates alterations to state constitutions or bylaws, allowing for changes to be made outside the usual census intervals when maps are redrawn.

“The Democrats will dismantle Greg Abbott’s ‘Fully Equipped Map.’ Fantastic work is being done here. Donald Trump, prepare for the most stunning recall you could imagine!” Newsom stated in his official communication.

“As the presidency draws to a close, this could be a disastrous day for you (the Democrats will take Congress!). Many are calling it ‘Freeing Day!’ Thank you for focusing on this issue!” he added.

The meeting is set for Thursday at 11:30 AM and will include members from the California Legislature.

On Monday, Newsom wrote to Trump urging the president to halt rezoning efforts in Texas and other Republican states, warning that these actions endanger democracy.

“If you don’t stop, I will have no choice but to lead an initiative to counteract the manipulation of maps in red states by redrawing California’s maps,” he asserted. “However, if other states cease their rezoning efforts, we would gladly reciprocate.”

Trump was expected to reply to Newsom’s letter by Tuesday evening, but he did not respond.
