California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week banning 1-pound disposable propane cylinders. That means only more expensive reusable cylinders will be available in the state.
of san francisco chronicle reported:
The dark green color used in camp stoves comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Sunday requiring all one-pound cylinders sold in the state to be reusable or refillable starting in 2028. Single-use propane tanks like these will soon be phased out in California.
…
The California Product Stewardship Council, a nonprofit coalition of local governments that proposed the bill, estimates that between 4 million and 7 million single-use cylinders are sold in California each year.
…
In 2022, Newsom vetoed a nearly similar bill, SB 1256. In his veto letter, Newsom expressed concern about a ban on the sale of single-use cylinders with “no plan for collection and replenishment infrastructure.” The governor also urged the Legislature to consider “market-based solutions” rather than an outright ban.
Democrats say Newsom decided to ban the cylinders after negotiations with manufacturers failed.
Critics will note that Newsom's ban is the latest regulation to make living in California more expensive and burdensome than in other states.
On Wednesday, Newsom signed a bill that imposes new demands on the oil industry and shuts down oil fields south of Los Angeles that have been in production for a century.
