Newsom Defends Ties with Democratic Socialists
In a recent discussion, California Governor Gavin Newsom found himself under scrutiny for his stance on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). He defended the group while suggesting that Democrats should embrace a more inclusive approach rather than distancing themselves from leftist ideologies. This comes at a crucial time with the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon.
Newsom, who has been hinting at a presidential bid in 2028, expressed his belief that the Democratic Party aligns closely with the DSA on significant issues like universal healthcare and climate change. In an interview with PBS NewsHour, he addressed the implications of recent electoral wins by democratic socialists across the nation.
“Should we integrate these energizing ideas into the Democratic platform?” the interviewer asked. Newsom confidently replied, “I think they are. We want to take money out of politics, and I’ve supported clean money campaigns for decades.”
When pressed about the perceived gap between the Democratic leadership and DSA candidates, he maintained that it’s the ideas that matter, saying, “I believe in universal healthcare and Medicare for all, which the party overwhelmingly supports.” He emphasized that the goals, like reducing costs and addressing climate change, resonate across the party lines.
“Our planet is getting hotter and drier, and we need to tackle climate issues. DSA’s views on moving away from fossil fuels align with mainstream Democratic positions,” Newsom added. He downplayed the fears surrounding the rise of democratic socialism, framing it as merely a label familiar to him, referring to them as progressives.
Newsom further stated, “Maybe it’s just me being from California, but I find it healthy. I’m not consumed by this,” asserting that the DSA’s concepts have long been part of the party’s dialogue.
The DSA, a prominent socialist organization in the U.S., has recently unveiled an updated platform advocating for radical changes like eliminating the Senate and granting amnesty to all immigrants.
What’s intriguing is the DSA’s recent evolution from a relatively fringe movement to a significant force within the Democratic Party, with some of its members successfully challenging established figures. This shift has stirred debate about whether the DSA is paving the way for the future of the party.
