Newsom to Repeal Call for Constitutional Convention After Trump Victory

California and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom are rescinding their call for a 2023 national constitutional convention in light of Donald Trump's recent victory and the possibility that Republicans will propose new amendments of their own. I'm making plans.

As Breitbart News reported last June, Newsom proposed amendments to the Constitutional Convention that would limit the Second Amendment, including setting the minimum age for gun ownership at 21 and universal background checks. were asked to make suggestions.

But as Breitbart News pointed out, there were also political obstacles.

[S]A two-thirds vote of Congress is usually required to begin the process of amending the Constitution, but how will Newsom get started if Congress is to blame for inaction, as he says? It is unclear whether this is the intention.

The only alternative to constitutional reform is to hold a state convention under Article V of the Constitution, but conservatives have relished this prospect and have been eager to organize for nearly a decade.

Conservative amendments include setting the number of Supreme Court justices at nine to prevent liberal attempts to fill the court. and guarantee the right to life.

In 2013, conservative radio host and litigation activist Mark Levin announced: freedom amendmenthas proposed 11 amendments, including term limits for Congress and a balanced budget amendment that would limit Congressional spending.

Similarly, Trump's victory in the popular vote has suddenly turned the California Democratic Party cold.

of san francisco chronicle reported On Monday, Newsom and the California Legislature had second thoughts.

“The damage the Constitutional Convention will do to the fundamental rights of Californians is immeasurable,” said State Sen. Scott Wiener. “Once that happens, extremists can easily hijack this treaty, undermining democracy and locking down the power of the largest corporations on earth while protecting women, LGBTQ people, workers, immigrants, and any other group.” We can push for a treaty that deprives us of that.”

“Our constitutional treaty puts all of our nation's rights, civil liberties, and fundamental values at risk,” said Dora Rose, vice president of the League of Women Voters of California.

Wiener's Senate Joint Resolution 1 calls for a national convention to propose a constitutional amendment that would ban gun ownership by anyone under 21, require background checks for all gun purchases, and prohibit the possession and sale of semi-automatic firearms. The content is to cancel the requested September 2023 bill, SJR7. It is known as an assault weapon. Such amendments would require approval by three-quarters of the state legislatures.

Twenty-seven states have requested some kind of constitutional convention, just shy of the 34 needed.
