Governor Newsom to Visit Los Angeles Amid Fire Anniversary and Protests

Governor Gavin Newsom is set to travel to Los Angeles next week, coinciding with the one-year mark since the devastating fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena. His visit comes in a climate of rising anger and planned protests from local residents.

Confirmed by his team, Newsom intends to meet in person with those affected, many of whom are still facing challenges as they try to rebuild their lives after the fires.

This visit is particularly pertinent as frustrations continue to escalate. Community members are organizing protests in both Palisades and Altadena, pressing for federal help, as well as for oversight on stalled disaster relief efforts. They feel compelled to advocate for a more proactive role in the rebuilding process.

Residents are feeling the strain of financial responsibilities, like mortgages and rent, while still being displaced from their homes, which remain uninhabitable.

In response, Newsom’s team is emphasizing a narrative focused on recovery. They underscore that the governor has undertaken significant actions to eliminate bureaucratic barriers that hinder recovery efforts. A spokesperson criticized former President Donald Trump for failing to share recovery plans, labeling his actions as both disrespectful and shameful.

Since the fires, the governor has issued 27 executive orders aimed at expediting the rebuilding process, including waivers and simplifying regulations that have traditionally slowed such efforts.

According to state officials, these measures are having a positive impact. Local authorities are issuing rebuilding permits at nearly three times the rate seen after previous disasters, with reviews averaging around 30 days. As of this week, 2,559 permits have been granted, compared to just 385 a year following the Camp Fire.

However, some residents express skepticism about the effectiveness of these changes. Jeremy Padawer, a survivor of the Palisades fire and an organizer of protests, shared his hope that Newsom would attend their upcoming demonstration, titled “They Let Us Burn!” Padawer emphasized the need for the governor to truly listen to the voices of those still grappling with recovery.

“I would love to have Governor Newsom come,” he mentioned. “All he has to do is listen.”
