Nexstar and Sinclair to restore access to Jimmy Kimmel

Nexstar, Sinclair to end blackout of Jimmy Kimmel

Television Landscape Shifts Following Kimmel’s Controversial Comments

Recently, host Jimmy Kimmel made headlines for remarks concerning the assassination of local TV news figure Pair Charlie Kirk, which led to significant changes in programming. Last week, Kimmel was initially dropped from the airwaves, but as of Friday, both Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair have announced plans to bring him back to ABC’s affiliate network.

Sinclair stated that its intention throughout this situation was to ensure that their programming remains both accurate and appealing to a wide audience. They emphasized their commitment to serving the community while also adhering to responsibilities as a broadcaster, which include airing national network content.

Feedback on the Kimmel situation has reportedly been… thoughtful. Sinclair indicated they received input from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders, all representing diverse viewpoints.

Nexstar expressed gratitude for constructive discussions with Disney executives aimed at addressing the concerns surrounding Kimmel’s comments. They reaffirmed their dedication to upholding the First Amendment and providing factual content tailored to the interests of the communities they serve. The company highlighted its position as a prominent player amid national streaming services while committing to respect local sensibilities.

Following Kimmel’s on-air comments, ABC temporarily halted the show. In reaction, some comedians accused conservatives of leveraging the situation for “political points.” Interestingly, former President Trump humorously portrayed Kirk’s death as akin to mourning a child’s dead goldfish.

This week, as Disney reinstated Kimmel, they described his remarks about Kirk as “greater” and “insensitive.”

Nexstar, recognized as a significant provider of local news, decided against airing Kimmel just hours after FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr voiced criticism of Kimmel’s comments and suggested that ABC reconsider continuing the show.

Earlier this year, Nexstar revealed intentions for a major merger with rival Tegna, which reflects broader industry trends amidst fluctuating viewer sentiments.

In a follow-up statement, Nexstar emphasized that their commitment to their principles has guided their decisions, irrespective of outside pressures from government figures.

Kimmel made a return to the screen on Tuesday evening, clarifying that his remarks were not meant to trivialize the death of a young man, but rather to highlight what he sees as attempts by the Trump administration to silence him.

Hours before Kimmel’s return, Trump expressed his discontent in a social media post, indicating curiosity about how ABC would respond moving forward.
