Debate Over Kimmel’s Show After Controversial Comments
The panel on “Big Money Show” is discussing ABC’s choice to air Jimmy Kimmel’s program, which followed his contentious remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
ABC has decided to put Kimmel’s late-night show on hold due to these comments. This comes after Nexstar Media Group announced it would preempt his show. A spokesperson from Disney-owned ABC confirmed on Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live would not be airing indefinitely after one of its major broadcast partners opted to stop showing it.
Nexstar, which owns 32 ABC affiliate stations, expressed strong disapproval of Kimmel’s statements, stating that they would preempt his show “for the foreseeable future starting tonight.” The company believes Kimmel’s remarks are not conducive to a constructive political discourse.
“I don’t think Kimmel’s comments about Kirk’s death are helpful or appropriate during such a sensitive moment in our national political climate,” they stated, emphasizing the need for a more thoughtful dialogue in the communities they serve.
About Nexstar
Nexstar Media Group is the largest local broadcasting network in the U.S., owning or partnering with over 200 stations that reach 220 million viewers across 116 markets. They control 75% of the CW and also own News Nation, TV, Digital News Outlet, and several others.
Recently, Nexstar announced plans to acquire Tegna for $6.2 billion, a move they say will strengthen local news and programming.
Nexstar has also ramped up political ad revenue by expanding its affiliate networks in key electoral markets. The acquisition of Tegna still requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Kimmel’s Controversial Remarks
In a recent episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” the host mentioned, “We are seeing new lows; the ‘Maga Gangs’ are trying too hard to portray the child who killed Charlie Kirk as someone other than one of their own.” He also criticized Donald Trump’s response to Kirk’s assassination.
FCC Commissioner Brendan Kerr applauded Nexstar’s decision to sideline Kimmel’s show, pointing out the importance of prioritizing community values over controversial programming.
This incident has reignited discussions regarding Section 230 protections for social media platforms, as Kimmel’s remarks sparked considerable debate about the appropriateness of content in sensitive times.
Some free speech advocates have criticized the push against Kimmel, arguing that the FCC shouldn’t dictate what late-night hosts can say, as this situation raises concerns about regulatory overreach and the potential chilling effects on discourse.
