World Cup Spots at Stake for Europe

ATLANTA — The final spots for the FIFA World Cup from Europe are set to be determined soon, and this will include the United States’ last group stage opponent.

The influence of these matches on Team USA’s journey is significant.

Depending on the outcome, the U.S. could either face a tough challenge with Turkey or a relatively easier one with Slovakia, Romania, or Kosovo—there seems to be no middle ground.

The UEFA World Cup playoffs are kicking off on Thursday, featuring eight semi-final matches. The victors will advance to the final four next Tuesday, ensuring their seats at the World Cup.

In Pass C, Turkey will host Romania in Istanbul at 1pm, and Slovakia will welcome Kosovo in Bratislava at 3:45pm. The winners of these matches will compete again, playing in Bratislava or Pristina, Kosovo at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The victor will join the U.S., Paraguay, and Australia in Group C of the World Cup.

Team USA currently stands at 15th in FIFA’s rankings, in a manageable group alongside 27th-ranked Australia and 40th-ranked Paraguay. Turkey, however, poses the most significant threat, holding the 25th spot and having beaten the U.S. 2-1 in a previous encounter last June.

Slovakia is ranked 44th, Romania is at 49th, and Kosovo is at 79th.

Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter mentioned that he felt comfortable being called up by coach Mauricio Pochettino, despite the fact that he succeeded Berhalter’s father, Greg.

“No, I didn’t find it awkward. He made it clear from the outset that there was a reason for my selection and that he believed in me,” said the younger Berhalter. “He’s seen my performances and told me I belong here. He’s done a fantastic job of integrating me into the team.”

Recently, Kansas City Royals players, including Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez, and Carter Jensen, visited Team USA’s camp in Atlanta. They had conversations with Pochettino and were gifted original jerseys by forward Christian Pulisic.

With less than three months until the World Cup, FIFA has started canceling hotel bookings across various host cities. Reports indicate that around 2,000 out of 10,000 hotel reservations in Philadelphia were canceled last week, alongside significant cancellations in Mexico City and other U.S. cities.

This sudden vacancy has left hotels scrambling to fill empty rooms. I wonder, might a New Jersey hotel face similar issues?

MetLife Stadium is slated to host eight matches, including five group games, a Round of 32 game, a Round of 16 match, and the final on July 19. This raises questions about the overall future of the tournament.

New Jersey has already faced World Cup complications, such as the cancellation of the Liberty State Park fan festival due to delays in federal funding.

FIFA has acknowledged that geopolitical issues and visa complications are complicating international travel. The organization has reduced its operating budget by $100 million, affecting logistics and security, while ICE’s involvement at the games might further complicate matters for international visitors.
