NFL announces Eagles as designated team in league’s 1st-ever Brazil game

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the league’s latest global undertaking will take place in Sao Paulo, with the Philadelphia Eagles being named the designated team to play there in Week 1.

The Eagles will travel to South America for the league’s first game on the continent. Week 1 matches will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024.

This will be the first time the league has played a Friday game in Week 1 since 1970, when the Cardinals faced the Rams.

“This groundbreaking first international match in South America shows that our global footprint continues to expand,” Goodell said in a press release. “Playing on Friday night in Week 1 is a unique way to highlight our international growth and ambitions.”

Sao Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunez added, “The league’s decision to hold games in the first week of the NFL’s 2024 season is a true testament to their confidence in our efforts as a host city.” .

“Hosting this historic spectacle on the eve of Independence Day, bringing significant economic impact and job creation to São Paulo, is a great opportunity for São Paulo’s global importance as the venue for some of the world’s most exciting sporting and entertainment events.” It will draw attention to our city as a destination.”

It’s unclear who the Eagles’ opponent will be in Week 1. The Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Carolina Panthers are also the league’s designated teams for his 2024 international games.

The Bears, Vikings and Jaguars play in London, but the Panthers are designated for Munich.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he was “honored” his team was selected to play in Sao Paulo.
