NYPD Officer Honored After Fatal Shooting Incident

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged NYPD officer Didarul Islam in a memo sent to employees in the wake of a tragic incident in which a gunman killed four individuals and injured others. Goodell noted that one NFL staff member was seriously hurt but is currently in stable condition.

In the memo, Goodell expressed gratitude towards Islam, remarking on his bravery in risking his life to protect others. The statement highlighted the rapid and decisive response by law enforcement officers, emphasizing Islam’s sacrifice.

Islam, aged 36, had served in the military for four years before joining the NYPD. He was a married father of two young boys, with his wife expecting their third child, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Originally from Bangladesh, Islam was stationed at District 47 in the Bronx. During the incident, he was one of two officers present at the scene in a New York skyscraper.

The NYPD stated, “Islam represents the best in our department.” They recognized that he was protecting New Yorkers when his life was tragically cut short. The department plans to hold a prayer in his honor during this time of profound grief, affirming that his legacy will be remembered always.

Mayor Eric Adams announced that flags at all government buildings would be lowered to half-staff to pay tribute to Officer Islam.
