NYPD Officer Recognized for Bravery After Tragic Shooting
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell commended NYPD officer Didarul Islam in a note directed to colleagues following a tragic incident where a gunman took four lives during a shooting. Goodell’s memo, which was shared with media outlets, outlined that one NFL employee sustained serious injuries but is currently stable.
In his message, Goodell expressed gratitude towards Islam, highlighting his selflessness in protecting others during the event.
“We are deeply thankful for the law enforcement officials who swiftly responded to this threat, particularly the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty,” the memo read.
Didarul Islam, aged 36, had previously served in the military for four years before his untimely passing on Monday night. He leaves behind a wife and two young sons, with a third child on the way, as stated by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, was working as part of a paid detail program at the NYPD in the Bronx and was on duty along with another officer in the building where the shooting occurred.
The NYPD characterized Islam as embodying the finest qualities of the department, stating, “When his life was cut short, he was defending New Yorkers from harm. We will honor his legacy always.”
In a show of respect, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that flags at all government buildings will be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Islam.
