Shedeur Sanders’ unexpected move as the fifth overall pick in the recent NFL draft has stirred quite a bit of debate. Some people are clearly divided on whether it was a good choice or not. A notable supporter, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., has been vocal about Sanders’ potential. After Sanders’ name was called, Kiper expressed his thoughts passionately, resulting in a bit of a back-and-forth with his colleague, Rece Davis.
Kiper emphasized that the NFL has valued quarterbacks for decades. It seems he genuinely believed that Sanders is one of the most resilient players out there. On the other hand, NFL analyst Louis Riddick pointed out that it wasn’t really about Sanders’ abilities, but rather about how teams viewed him. Davis chimed in, suggesting that the draft results spoke for themselves.
This on-air exchange raised eyebrows about the relationship between Davis and Kiper. However, Davis later clarified on a podcast that he has no issues with his co-workers. It’s all part of the job, he explained, noting that Kiper’s role as a draft analyst is critical.
Davis acknowledged that Kiper’s expertise should be respected. He mentioned that criticisms sometimes stemmed from what fans expected based on past performances and rankings. He argued that something likely influenced Sanders’ draft position, potentially related to the pre-draft evaluations that led teams to hesitate.
Davis added that while it might not make sense for Sanders to drop below certain rankings, the situation felt a bit off. He maintained that his working relationship with Kiper is solid, even enjoying their debates. Following his selection, Sanders expressed gratitude on social media, saying, “Thank you God.”
Last season, Sanders threw for over 4,130 yards while at Colorado, putting him in a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland, joining Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
