NFL legend criticizes refs regarding Patrick Mahomes' officiating

Former Dallas Cowboys Star Critiques NFL Officials

Troy Aikman, a former star of the Dallas Cowboys, appeared to express frustration with NFL officials during a recent game. This came after the Washington Commanders were penalized for unnecessary roughness involving Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The incident happened in the fourth quarter when Commanders defensive lineman Jarzan Newton got through the Chiefs’ offensive line to sack Mahomes. As the play ended, Newton was flagged for throwing Mahomes to the ground.

Aikman commented on the call, stating it seemed a bit excessive. “It wasn’t that much, but, you know, with quarterbacks—especially this one—they’re going to protect him. There’s a lot of frustration coming from that side,” he said.

Despite the controversy, the penalty didn’t affect the final score. The Chiefs rallied in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to win 28-7.

The treatment of Mahomes by NFL officials has been a point of discussion among fans. Since 2019, Mahomes has dominated the league, winning three Super Bowls, which inevitably invites scrutiny.

The most intense criticism surfaced during a playoff game earlier this year, where Mahomes drew two questionable penalties and scored ten points on two separate drives. In response to the scrutiny, Mahomes stated, “I don’t really care. I’ve learned that no matter what happens during the game, if we keep winning, it will be fine.” He reflected on how officials do their best to let players make the plays that count.

Aikman, while acknowledging the inconsistencies, emphasized that calls are sometimes part of the larger dynamics of a game. “There were definitely calls here and there that upset people, but there were also many plays that truly shaped the game’s outcome,” he noted.

The NFL had previously confirmed that officials made the right calls during that playoff matchup, illustrating how interpretations often vary in the fast-paced world of football.
