NFL news: 49ers’ coach, Brock Purdy’s mentor, quits coaching

For the first time in his NFL career, Brock Purdy will acquire another quarterback coach.

The San Francisco 49ers announced their coaching staff for Tuesday's 2025 season, with Brian Griese not on the staff as a quarterback coach.

The reason Griese is not on the coaching staff is that he decided to end his coaching career after three seasons. San Francisco Chronicle.

Gliese, 49, contributed to the 49ers draft Purdy as he gave the former Iowa quarterback the top grades of all the quarterbacks in the 2022 draft despite being the final pick of the draft.

Griese and then assistant quarterback coach Klay Kubiak spoke with Purdy via Zoom in a pre-draft interview.

“I know that Brock cherished the fact that he was selfless,” Griese said via the San Francisco Chronicle. “He was humble. The relationship was important to him. You can tell pretty quickly whether the quarterback is about lifting up the others around him or whether it's about him.”

In addition to his selflessness and leadership, Gliese also considered Purdy's accuracy high.

Griese almost stepped in after coaching his first season, but after measuring family considerations, he decided to go back.

Now, for two seasons, Griese left the team, thinking about running away first.

Griese was first in the offseason in a head coaching interview with the New York Jets for his then-flewd head coaching position.

The 49ers promoted Mick Lombardi, the team's senior offensive assistant, to quarterback coach last year. Lombardi was the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders for two seasons.

Gliese played in the NFL for 11 seasons, winning the Denver Broncos and the Super Bowl in 1999. Griese also made the Pro Bowl in 2000.

Throughout his 11-year career, Gliese had 83 career starts, 45-38, threw 19,440 yards with 119 touchdowns and 99 intercepts in his career.

Following his performance career, Gliese was an ESPN analyst for 12 seasons and joined the 49ers coaching staff directly from the booth.

The 49ers went last in NFC West, 6-11 after having the Super Bowl the previous season.

The team relies on Purdy to help engineer the turnaround, but the quarterback must do it on his side without grease.
