NFL news: Geno Smith traded to Raiders by Seahawks

The Las Vegas Raiders have a new quarterback.

According to multiple reports, Genosmith is being traded with the Raiders by the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2025 third round draft pick.

Las Vegas was always expected to add an offseason after releasing Gardner Minshew and suffered quarterback troubles over the past few seasons with Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O'Connell in the mix.

Instead of signing free agent or waiting for the 2025 NFL Draft, the Raiders have signed a blockbuster deal with the Seahawks, a team that appears to be trying to rock their own roster to land a veteran Signal Cara.

The Raiders, who have the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, may still take the quarterback.

Smith only has one more year left on the contract, and ESPN reports that trade took place without extension. In other words, Smith will become a free agent in 2026.

The deal hasn't been official yet, but Max Crosby, the star of Max Crosby, who has just become the highest-paid non-quarter in NFL history with the new expansion in Las Vegas, shared his thoughts on the news.

“Sin City” will also be reunited when new head coaches Pete Carroll and Smith return together.

When Smith joined the Seahawks in 2020, Carroll was in 11 seasons leading Seattle. Carroll oversaw the campaign in 2022 that oversees Smith's career. He threw a pro bowler with a career-high 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The season solidified Smith's spot as the team's starting quarterback, and he has served in the role for the past two seasons. However, Carroll was let go after the 2023 season and was eliminated from coaching in 2024.

The 73-year-old was returned to the NFL by the Raiders.

The Seahawks, a team that releases veteran receiver Tyler Rockett and demands DK Metcalf to trade, appears to be tearing things apart by making the franchise quarterback walk.

The Seahawks will be free-agent quarterback candidates like others looking for new teams like Sam Darnold, Aaron Rodgers and others.

Smith has led the Seahawks to his best regular season record since being named a starter in 2024. Despite these efforts, the Seahawks missed the playoffs with Mike McDonald as the team's new head coach.

Despite riding a roller coaster, Smith reset his career highs in passing yards, throwing a franchise record of 4,320. He threw 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Despite his playoff appearance in Seattle as a starter (loss in the wildcard round in 2022), Smith has proven he can get the job done in the clutch moment. He led the Seahawks to a four-game drive, which linked him to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes with nine seasons in the past two seasons.

Smith and Carroll hope to be able to drop that intercept number towards 2025. It was the third most in the NFL last season.

McDonald has consistently supported Smith despite questions about his future with the franchise last month. Last month, he said, “Geno is our quarterback. I don't know the conversation. It's clear that this guy is one of the quarterbacks.”

However, the shocking trade collapsed and changed both franchises heading for the new league year, starting on March 12, when free agents were officially allowed to sign on March 12.
